Oil Shipment Watch
Diesel is what moves lorries, tractors, trawlers and most vans in Ireland. Its price starts on a tanker. This page tracks how much oil is actually getting through the world's sea lanes, and what Irish drivers are paying, using official figures only — so you can draw your own conclusion.
Data age: fuel prices to 2026-09-07 (8 days ago). Nothing on this page is live. If that date looks old, the feed has stopped and the numbers below are stale.
What Irish diesel costs
Excise is a fixed amount per litre, so it does not rise with the oil price. That is why the pump price moves by a smaller percentage than the fuel underneath it — and why the figure before tax is the better early warning.
Ireland follows the continent, with a delay
Weekly change in the diesel price before tax. When the EU average moves, Ireland has tended to follow a week or two later.
| Week | Ireland | EU average |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-08-03 | +7.4% | +3.7% |
| 2026-08-10 | +4.0% | -2.5% |
| 2026-08-17 | +0.0% | +3.1% |
| 2026-08-24 | +0.3% | +2.3% |
| 2026-08-31 | +1.8% | -1.7% |
| 2026-09-07 | +1.6% | +4.3% |
This is what the gap has been recently, not a promise about what happens next. Read it as: a move on the continent has usually not finished working through Irish forecourts yet.
What a litre costs elsewhere
| Country | Diesel, at the pump |
|---|---|
| Ireland | €1.954 |
| EU average | €2.107 |
| United States | $1.576 |
| Germany | €2.328 |
| France | €2.257 |
| Netherlands | €2.442 |
| Italy | €2.142 |
| Spain | €1.796 |
| Poland | €1.812 |
| Sweden | €1.588 |
Different currencies and very different tax rates — this is what a driver hands over, not a like-for-like comparison of the fuel itself.
How to read this
- The price before tax reacts first. The pump price follows, damped by fixed excise.
- A weekly move on the continent has usually not finished reaching Irish forecourts. Compare the two columns above rather than either on its own.
Where these numbers come from
All figures are official and free to the public. Where two sources disagree we show both rather than splitting the difference. Where a figure is revised later, the revision is recorded. Nothing here is investment advice or a forecast of what you will pay.
